BAYSO merges with the Cincinnati Youth Symphony Orchestras August 11, 2011
Article by Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will be expanding its youth offerings after a merger with the Blue Ash Youth Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra was expected to announce today. To be called the CSYO Concert Orchestra, the new youth orchestra will join the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra and the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players as one of three main ensembles comprising the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras. The new ensemble will serve student musicians in grades 7 to 12 and feed into the CSYO, which is open to students in grades 9 to 12. The goal, the orchestra said, is to create a tiered program and also to expand the Cincinnati Symphony's reach to instrumental students across the Greater Cincinnati region. Discussions of a merger began a year ago, when both groups met to discuss ways to expand music education opportunities in the region. The move to strengthen the youth orchestra program "reinforces the CSO's position as a leader in music education," said Melody Sawyer-Richardson, chair of the CSO board of directors. The new CSYO Concert Orchestra will be conducted by Dale Swisher, current conductor of the Blue Ash Youth Symphony. It will have its own parent advisory board and parent volunteers. Cincinnati Symphony first violinist James Braid founded the Blue Ash Youth Symphony in 1991. It has a relationship with the Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, which holds an annual youth concerto competition and invites the younger players for a combined Memorial Day concert each year. Those activities will continue. Former CSO music director Max Rudolf founded the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra in 1964 with the idea of fostering the talent of outstanding young instrumentalists. It has grown from an ensemble of 80 students to, with the newest addition, three ensembles of 200 students from more than 30 area schools in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Musicians are accepted based on auditions and recommendations from school music teachers and private instructors. Auditions for all ensembles will be held the fourth week of August. For audition information for the CSYO and CSYO Concert Orchestra, visit www.cincinnatisymphony.org/csyo. For audition information about the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players, visit www.cincinnatysymphony.org/nouveau. The Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras receive support from Coney Island, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Sycamore Schools, the Queen City Chapter of The Links, Inc. and First United Church of Christ in College Hill.
